Composting

While driving around Vero Beach we found a 24” piece of culvert on the side of the road. Nick was very excited because he has been wanting to begin composting and needed something to use. So, we picked it up and brought it home with us. Nick drilled holes on the sides (the holes allow the compost to breath which help break down the things we put in it.) and made it work. For those of you who don't compost here is some information about composting. Composting is great and it has helped reduce the number of trash bags we use by allowing us to use some of the things we throw away for a better cause than getting thrown away. We put any food scraps we don't use like potatoe peels, coffee filters, egg shells ect. Plus, composting is great for gardens! The compost you collect is broken down into a rich soil that will be used to enrich other soil and provide nutrients and minerals to the garden.

Shrimp Eggs

On my day off, Nick had to go in for a half day so, I got to tag along. While Nick did what he had to do I got to look at a couple of shrimp eggs under the microscope. It was really neat! I had to share my experience so I took some pictures for you to see. Each egg is about a tenth of the size of a ball point pen. Pretty neat huh?

Fresh Florida oranges anyone?

One of the perks of living in Florida is the access to fresh citrus fruits. Right now all of the oranges trees are in full bloom and everywhere you look there are fresh oranges covering all the trees! Scientific Associates has an orange tree and Nick got to bring some delicious oranges home. Boy were they sweet!

We are not alone!

We were in Lowe’s getting a couple of things and decided to check out the magazine section. We found a very interesting magazine named Urban Farm. We were very curious because in the front cover was a little chicken next to the words “Keep City-Centric Chickens”. We having chickens of our own and living in the city felt an instant connection.We bought the magazine and fell in love with all the articles. The magazine is for individuals living in urban communities and wanting to depend on their own abilities to provide food for the table. We read about how to keep goats, chickens, and raised bed gardens for sustainability in the city. Of course, Nick was in heaven, he finally found a magazine that he could relate to while we live in the city. We bought their second volume and we look forward in subscribing. We are very excited to put some of their ideas into practice!

A door has opened...

For the past couple of months I have been looking for some sort of internship to help me get some real Interior Design experience under my belt. At the moment, internships are very hard to get because of the “economy” and paid internships are extremely slim. God had a plan for me though. My professor got an email from a local Interior Design office looking for someone who was interested in becoming a design assistant/pied intern. My professor thought I was right for the job and said you need to call them. The interview went very well and I am officially working for Olivia O’Bryan a couple days a week. I'm excited to be putting in my two weeks notice at Bed Bath &; Beyond. Yey!

Say hello to our little friend!

The other day while we were at home enjoying a day off, Nick was checking on the salt levels of our water softener when he found a brown rat snake living underneath one of the lids. This type of snake is very kind and helps keep bugs and rats away from our home. :) Nick told me that the snake had glazed eyes which means he/she is getting ready to shed and since it's cold blooded it found a safe warm place to stay.
